View Full Version : timing belt slipping

I found the cause of my issues. I think the timing belt is slipping. I align everything and tension up the timing belt. I start the car, it runs fine for a second, then gets progressively worse. I turn it of and check the alignment to find everything way off again.

I've redone the above many times. Is it possible that the tension components might not be functioning correct, allowing the belt to slip?

How would I fix the above problem?

what is the gear ratio like?

When the crank is set to the zero position, and aligned with the cam gears at thier position marks; then the engine run; should the cam gears line up with thier marks when the crank is set again to it's 0 position?

it "should" if yours isn't something is probly wrong

it should as long as you on top dead center(1). you need to turn the crank twice to turn the cams once. they move half the speed.

so if they are pointed opposite the marks, then your not at top dead center(1).

Generally timing belts dont "slip". They usually just break or the teeth break off. If it starts then goes off then you are not installing it right. It can be tricky to get right. I've done it a few times. It gets easier once u get the knack hehe.

when you install the timing belt... pull the bottom cam gear slightly away from the block then put the timing belt onto the oil pump and up to the drivers side (intake) cam gear... keeping tension on the belt the whole time... then over to the exhaust cam gear. Basically the side without the tensioner has to be perfectly tight.. then, once you've got the timing belt around the whole setup... start pushing in the bottom gear and push the timing belt onto the rest of the gears slowly... 1/4" at a time, going around from gear to gear.

Thanks for the input, but this was posted over a month ago. This issue was ruled out, now I'm struggling with an electrical issue. Do you happen to know where I can get a CPS tp try out (I think mine might be toast)?
