Howdy all. I'm Dan. I live near the University of Alberta and I just got my first Mark II Supra. I'm in the process of replacing the head gasket right now (natch). There are some photos of my car and the progress I've made on the engine on my Flickr account, (http://www.flickr.com/photos/27596487@N07/) if anyone's interested.

Nah - if it's not a bad blow, and you didn't drive on it much, you can do the repair in the car. Especially if you are just going back to the usual fibre gasket for that engine.

5Ms aren't nearly as prone to BHGs as the 7Ms are, or at least that's my impression. I still figure that a 7M with appropriately torqued head bolts and properly maintained cooling system isn't all THAT prone to BHGs either. (Though I'll b e the first to admit that my cooling system hasn't always been properly maintained.)

Well, as I'm getting deeper into the engine I'm seeing more and more things that need replacing, cleaning, or repairing. There's part of me that hopes that the block is cracked or something so I have an excuse to swap a 7MGTE.

And that is how we all think. :D Ohh...I hope this is broken so I can upgrade this, or install that. :D
Welcome to the club.

I dunno. I went into my 7M-GTE swap hoping that stuff WASN'T broken... And upgraded stuff anyway.

Realistically, yeah. There's just so much that needs working over on this car that a new engine will probably be cheaper in the long run--not as much fun, though!
