Hey 1j!
That's the problem with the HKS intakes, they get dirty like mad. I've only once seen one that was clean, and it was brand new.
As far as I know you can only replace them, and I don't know if the K&N cleaner would work, but you can give it a try I guess.
If you do, let us all know what happens!
Cheers,
Tim

buy a new filter element, thats whats supposed to be done on them.
personally i prefer the k&n, 1 cleaning kit is good for multiple cleanings and are sometimes very cheap at partsource and such on sale.

I thought I already said something along these lines in this thread, but it must have been another one.
To back up Andriy, yes, the APEX-I one is much better than the HKS filter. Like he said, cleans with soap and water. It's a beautiful thing really. Also, does not get oil into your intake. Tests have also shown the APEX-I filter has the best flow AND filtration.
That's the way I'd go!
Cheers,
Tim

i agree that it is nice, but all the tests i've seen say the k&n actually filters the best, but is also the worst flowing aftermarket, kinda goes hand in hand. not by much than the apexi mind you, but it was beter.
of course, i also made an adapter for the k&n cone for earl, cost me a whooping 7$. so for someone on a budget, thats good too.
But earls never had the chance to use it yet, can't afford a cone filter, lol.

Hey Glenn!
It may be possible that the K&N filters better, I don't recall nor care enough right now (studying for a midterm)to go back and check, but I don't use them because they are oil-based, and the APEX-I is dry. The oil-based ones are well known for letting oil clog up the afms in cars. A buddy of mine has one and he takes his afm apart once a year and cleans the K&N oil out of it.
Cheers,
Tim

then hes over oiling it, very little oil is used on a k&n, your typical cleaning kit will last multiple cleanings, i've only ever bought 1 cleaning kit and been using k&n for 4 years or so. Never noticed any oil at all in my intakes, nor has barry as far as i know, hes been using them just as long. Nor have i ever heard of other people doing that, including people i know who have used k&n's for the last 25 years.
my new filter uses only 0.68 oz of fluid to oil it. to give an example.
the dry think is nice though, but then you are replacing filter elements, which can end up costing more.
