Well, I'm inching closer to completion of my turbo swap. For those who don't know I have a 22RTE in a Celica. The Toyota CT20 turbo I ran gave it up in late June and I am replacing it with a Garrett GT2560R ball- bearing unit. Pretty exciting stuff, but I'm having to build EVERYTHING related to the turbo to make it happen.
The manifold is rough fabbed, waiting for my welder to have time to finish. It's a far cry from the early version that some of you have seen, now it looks like a header. The oil lines, coolant lines, and compressor connections are all designed and nearly all built. The outlet flange is fabbed, waiting for a final fitting with the turbo in the car to get the angles right.
Thanks to Barry for his offer to assist with the flanges. I meant to take you up on it, but as I was measuring things up one thing led to another and I ended up with workable pieces. I certainly did them the hard way compared to laser cutting though!
I hope to be finished within the next week or two. With a little luck there should still be a few weeks of nice cool air to enjoy before the season ends. Hope to make the dyno day too.

Another update- I haven't been online lately as I've been furiously pounding away at getting my car running before the snow flys. Apologies to those trying to get in touch, I just read last Saturdays PM!
As of tonight, the car is running again! All that's left is to splice the turbo to the exhaust. Sounds great with an open pipe, (the ball-bearing turbo actually whistles at idle!) but I don't want to attract the wrong kind of attention.
I will have insurance for Saturday, hope to catch up with some members over the weekend.

Sat. AM, drove to the muffler shop at 7:30, got the pipes spliced, and drove the car for most of the day. All seems good, the drivability issues are gone, thank God. I had nightmares about doing all of this work and not fixing the problem! The turbo works great, I didn't realize how laggy the old one was until now. I am running without a boost controller for now, can't wait to turn it up to where it belongs, but it's worthless in the rain anyway.
The only downside so far is the amount of heat generated by the header. I'll be looking into thermal control products very shortly. The hood above the header is dry in the rain!

That sounds really sweet Bob!
Looking forward to seeing your dyno sheet!
By the way, some suggestions on thermal products for that pesky header:
If you're rich: http://www.jet-hot.com/Pages/coatings.html
Also for richies:http://www.swaintech.com/header.html
If you're not: http://www.thermotec.com/products/full/11001/11001.html
Hope that helps you out some!
Let's get you a boost controller and crank her up for the dyno!

cruised around for a bit with Bob, Glenn and Barry tonight, the new manifold and turbo look sound and perform great, it was great watching you try to get traction from a stop in the rain Bob! lol
glad to see that everythings working out well with it, and well ahead of the dyno day.. can't wait to see what kind of numbers you and glenn are putting down with your new turbo setups

Thanks Dave, I had a lot of fun last night. Dry roads would have been more fun but as it was I had a good opportunity to work out any kinks without stressing anything too badly. The only problem I can see besides the heat is the need for a new exhaust gasket. I reused the old one and it's not sealing completely, but it'll serve for the time being. The header is coming off for ceramic coating as soon as the snow comes anyway.
As for performance, turbo lag is virtually nonexistent. I didn't realize how bad the old turbo was, the car snaps with the throttle now like it has a bigger engine! Top end seems better too, though dry roads will be needed to bear that out. The boost controller will go back on this week as well, I will be looking at around 10 psi, right now it's running around 5.
Now we need Glenn, Barry and you to get the turbos on. If we can all have them running at once, THAT will be a cruise!

bob, glad to see you got it all put back together... the offer for flanges is still open whenever, its not like its out of my job description, so i can use it as a "training excercise" ;)
that was a fun cruise, and im very lucky you didnt have any traction, hahah.
as for the turbo, we shall see... next spring there maybe any number of options under my hood.

Haha! Killed a Neon tonight. Young guy with gauge pods and a $400 muffler. His car had some work done to it and launched OK but the old Celi walked away from him when I saw he was asking for it! I love boost....

Haha!
Sounds great Bob, still can't wait to see how you do on the dyno!
Myself, well, I just bought a walbro and a lex afm, so, after grabbing some 550cc RCs, I'm going to peg myself at about 320RWHP next dyno at about 14psi. I better get one of those Bocsh Recirculators too, can't believe I turned down Earl's offer of like $10 for one...
Once again Bob, great work, and way to clean the smile of a young kid's face!
Cheers,
Tim

Tim, I pulled a Bosch valve off a Saab at pick n' pull for next to nothing! They shouldn't be hard to find at an import wreckers. For 14 pounds though, you'll have to use boost to keep it seated, which shortens their life expectancy. Look at the aftermarket, or a DSM unit, which has all metal construction.
300+ is a big number, I want to be there for that run! My little 22R is around 180 HP now, but my car is much leaner in the weight department than a Mark III Supra. Last dyno number for me was 164 WHP, 237 wheel lb/ft. The car feels MUCH stronger now so Saturday's runs will be very interesting.

320 at 14 psi, general rule of thumb is 10 hp per pound on a 7m, so from the stock 240 flywheel, so 360 flywheel, so after 15% drivetrain losses, its 306 by my math. assuming that whatever kms on the car has been nice to it.
Invest in a 3" elbow and DP and you'll definetly see more than that though, the stock mk3 unit is very constrivtive, also the mk3 IC isn't very god at those levels, it will get heatsoaked, not to mention that its good for a stock unit of 20 years ago but that still doesn't mean its a good overall unit.
i'm not an optimist though, and i don't know your cars mods, i can't remember half of your guys faces to screen names, or even your real names, lol. So unless i've worked on the car, i don't know it.

Well, I already have a full three-inch exhaust, just so you know: Tanabe cat-back, BIC testpipe, and BIC ceramic-coated DDP (includes elbow). I'm accounting for 320rwhp with the following mods: the above mentioned exhaust components, an AVC-R holding boost at 14psi, an SAFC II (or emanage, we'll see) tuning the fuel, 550cc injectors, lex afm, and a walbro fuel pump, +MHG (and maybe increased compression, once again, we'll see). My goal stands at 370rwhp on a CT-26, no matter how many of them I have to blow up to do it.
As far as I know, 370rwhp will be a world record for stock CT-26 (at least on all the forums).
I'm more interested in seeing what Bob's car does right now though.
Cheers,
Tim
EDIT: I should mention that I know the current IC is a restriction at this point, amd I'll be replacing it sometime late next year hopefully. Also planning on rebuilding engine to .40 over stock, and may need to go stand alone to get the numbers I want, All in good time.

370 is capable on a stock Ct-26. i'm sure some of the 7mgte mk2 guys are making that on the ct still.
I didn't realize you had the DP and all that, with that much already done i can see 320 being a reasonable goal.
This winter i want to get a direct replacement for my mk3 unit made by global heat transfer with a Bar and plate core. If your interested i'll let you know when and how much.
Just realized that you probably mean a stock stock CT-26, not a trimmed one. Honestly i would send it out for a 60 trim, its less than 400 USD and will make your turbo much more effiecent at the same boost level since your underutilizing it at that point. i don't recomend clipping though, makes for more lag

I might be interested in the IC, but I'm really interested in aving a high quality spearco core, but the bar and plate design is a good one, so we'll see.
I do realize that my turbo will be a monster restriction at those levels . The entire point of what I'm trying to do is get a horsepower record for the stock CT-26, so I have no plans to upgrade it any time soon, and I don't ever plan on having a 60trim. I would do a 57 trim, but my goals for this car do not include a large turbo. I want to try and get 500rwhp off of something like a an sp58gt. I'm trying to build a car with a monster powerband. Then I'm going to build a 1JZ that can scream up to 10000rpm, that's the goal.
As for the CT-26 60 trim,I think the most anyone has made off of that is about 410RWHP (just for the record).
Should be a good year!
Cheers,
Tim

Guys, I appreciate the idea of getting what you can from the 26's, but turbo technology was not Toyota's strong suit. If I knew then what I know now, I would have gone Garrett from day one. Would have saved money in the long run and performed much better.
Here's the spec page for my turbo-http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/catelog/Turbochargers/GT25/GT2560R_466541_1.htm
I'd like to see you guys run something like this-http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/catelog/Turbochargers/GT28/GT2871R_743347_1.htm
Once you've gone ball-bearing you'll never go back, believe me. No lag, fat efficiency range, and cheaper parts than Toyota. Just a thought....

Bob, if i wanted more power i'd be going ball bearing like you, but i think that if i get to the point where the ct-26 is my weak point, i'll start another car, or start lighteneing, caging, coilovers, etc and let the 5m-gte be a finished product.
My next supra, will be Black, 17" meshies, and i'm leaning towards a certain 4L surprise. But i'm not telling.
Bob, i can't wait to see your car on the dyno, i'm hoping i will put down more power than you though :) cuz my heavier car needs it to keep up.

My point is that if you plan on putting money into a 26, it's better spent on a modern turbo. If you can budget build it, then go for getting all you can from the stocker.
As for power levels, you twin cam guys should be able to better my little truck motor with boost added. The true test will be next spring when we can line 'em up!

I know that my money is better spent on a modern turbo, and I'll get to something like the SP58GT or similar when I get there, but I am far more interested at this point in getting a record for the highest bone stock CT-26 pull ever.
There's more to a car than a high hp number. Think of the torque, like a V8 baby! :D
I rather take my time to let the MKIIs catch up
My car came stock with the CT-26, so I might as well see what I can do with it, besides, a look at the engine bay will still keep my cars secret hidden from view.
All in good time...
Cheers,
Tim

Us supra guys can do all we want, and as far as i'm concerned Bobs car will still be cooler, a turbo Celica GTS with Supra suspension. Thats in great shape to boot, i love it.
