View Full Version : Turbo Problems?

So my car started making this wierd whinning noise coming from my turbo and a little bit of a hesitation when boosting then when I let off the gas the car puffs some smoke. When I got to my house I checked the oil and I was low. I am still getting 10 to 11 psi on my boost gauge. Did I blow an oil seal? Or is my turbo just on its last leg?

Take off the accordian hose and check for shaft play. Whining noise doesn't seem like a good thing to me. If the turbo bearings are gone then the turbo is at best a rebuild/upgrade candidate.

Ya the whinning noise didn't sound like a good thing to me either. I do have the turbo that came out of it and it has some play mybe I could just rebuild it. So does anyone happen to know were to purchase a rebuild kit?
Thanks For all the help.
Tony

Trust me, YOU cannot rebuild a turbo - gotta take it to a place that deals with turbos and other very high speed rotational equipment.

Sounds like seals to me though.

So I actually work for a company that specilizes in high speed rotational equipment and I am far from stupid. So I ask again does anyone know were to purchase a ct26 rebuild kit? And has anyone ever sent a ct26 to rabidchimp.com?

Thanks again for any help

None of us work for companies that specialize in rebuilding turbos, so no.

I have heard good things about turbos rebuilt by Aaron (RC) though.

Well, I see CT26 rebuild kits on eBay, but even if I did work specialising in high speed rotational assemblies, I don't know how much I'd trust those eBay kits...

Check out Driftmotion. You may have to dig, but it's there.

Driftmotion has a plain jane ct26 rebuild kit for $80. If you do end up going ahead with this, please let us know how it goes!

We don't often hear of people rebuilding a ct-26 diy-style. One barrier is obviously the equipment, but the second is cost... a proper rebuild approaches the cost of a new turbo.

Call Aaron at Driftmotion and ask him. It might be on their site, but it's alot easier to call him. He's a great guy to deal with too.

After more research the bearings in my turbo are shot so I am starting to think Jim is right and it might just be cheaper to bye a different turbo. I guess my question now is does anyone know were to bye a different turbo? Or if I send my turbo out to get rebuilt by someone should I rebuild it to stock?
Thanks guys for all the help.

That depends on your budget and power goals, as well as the suitability of your current turbo for rebuilding (no cracks in turbine housing, no chipping on wheels etc,)

Driftmotion has 57 trim CT26 upgrades. $625 USD to just buy it, or $510 USD to have them rebuild and upgrade your existing turbo.

If you want it on the road for Spring, though, I figure that the former is going to be faster -- provided that Aaron has one in stock.

Well I guess the money I had saved for 550 injectors goes towards a different turbo. I did talk to driftmotion about rebuilding so I will be sending that out tomarrow. Thanks for the help again guys.

A 57 trim upgrade is definitely nice, and will be that much better when you do get the larger injectors. You might choose to go with a MAF-T instead of the Lexus AFM at that time to work with your A/F ratios, which is also a very nice solution.

MAF-T? Can you please educate me on this?

http://www.suprasport.com/Complete-MAFT-PRO-install-Solution_p_687.html

A device which uses a MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure) and gets rid of the AFM entirely. It then "translates" the MAP sensor data into an appropriate signal to fool your ECU into thinking that it's got an equivalent AFM signal.

The benefits are that you no longer need as much plumbing on the intake side. The ISC can just have a little filter on it, it doesn't need to tap into metered air. You don't have to worry about venting your BOV to atmosphere, either, since only air that's entered the manifold counts.

On top of that, you get some more tunability options as well, since you can have the MAF-T translate somewhat non-linear under certain conditions. This way, you can have some adjustment of your A/F ratios.

The kit I linked also has wideband O2, so you can really adjust A/F ratios, even in closed loop mode, as well as boost control based on manifold pressure, instead of pressure in the intake pipe.

I'd like to go with this kit... Eventually.

So I got my turbo back from Driftmotion today and great guys to deal with. I got it installed but my car is running kinda weird, I am only getting like 6 psi of boost and its idleing all funny and just wants to die. Could it be my wastegate? Can anyone help me please?

JimR

It is most likely not your new turbo at fault. Re-check all your intake plumbing, and vacuum lines. That includes your idle-up line, your wastegate control line, your bov line, etc etc.

Roughly 2 week turn around. Not bad, I'd say.

So I have double checked all of my IC plumbing and my vacuum lines and no leaks, tried to drive it this morning and it ia acting even more weird now, when i start it at an idle the service soon light comes on, when I rev it up to about 2500rpms the service soon light goes off, seems to idle alittle funny but when I put in gear and try to move it wants to die, ounce I get it out on the road and let off the gas it starts surging, This is starting to get kinda frustrating can someone please help?
Thanks

Aren't you curious about what code or codes are causing that "service light" to come on? Why not check them?

If you can demonstrate that you've done your research and you have a basic understanding of the diagnostic systems in your car, then it saves everyone time, and you will get a lot more help from senior members.

Alright I will see what I can figure out thank you.

SupraT

Well I must say thanks Jim for insisting that I pull my head out of my ass. I must admit that I had no clue of how to find out what code caused the service light to come on. So I have learned alot and now I am a little better at trouble shooting my car. To find out when my turbo blew its seals it got oil everywhere including before and after the turbo so it had actually clogged up my air flow meter. It seems to be running ok now. Thanks for the help!

The home made jumper wire and T1 and E1 terminals are a supra owners best friend! :D

SupraT, you've just earned a whole lot of free help! :-) Keep up the good work.

I'm such a softie... I always feel bad when I tell people to do their homework!

So I am finally code free but I am still only getting about 8psi of boost. Is there a way to shim a ct26? Now that I have this 57 trim turbo should it take longer to spool up? I am not getting the full 8psi until about 3500 or 4000rpms. Does anyone have any ideas?

JimR
04-24-2009, 05:48 PM
You want my manual boost controller.... :-)

Dan_Gyoba
04-24-2009, 06:16 PM
Shimming a CT26 is very easy. Takes very little to do.

But the 57 trim shouldn't be that laggy. You might have a boost leak somewhere. Check your plastic pipes for cracks.
