View Full Version : June 7th/8th: Supra Rescue Mission

Calgary members of the Alberta Supra Club, I come to you with a mission. This mission, should you choose to accept it, will be fraught with danger and intrigue, mystery and an overwhelming probability of death!

Okay, I'm being overly dramatic.

Realistically, there is a Supra in Edmonton that is currently in pieces. Specifically, it is an engine, a transmission, and a chassis. I would exceptionally like to make them one piece, again, and drive it home. However, I am going to need a hand in doing so.

As of right now, it appears that the deed may be done at Glenn's place. That makes two of us. However, I also need a ride up, most likely. Is anyone interested in a road trip? I'm thinking the 7th/8th of June. Glenn prefers the Sunday, since, you know, he doesn't work, for sure. We'll have to keep that in mind. Maybe go up on the evening of the 7th, and get started a little earlier?

Let me know what you guys are up to. I know Grant and Rob both expressed interest.

Go!

The Squadron (so far):

- Private First Class Keegan "Azrael" van der Laag
- Private First Class Donald "Keros" Teron
- Lieutenant Robert "Annoyingrob" Bruce
- Chief Petty Officer Grant "Supra_Newfie" Lethbridge
- Brigadier General Glenn "Supra_devil" Blakeman

The Aftermath:

The car was reassembled into a driving state, with three notable issues:

1. The water pump leaks like a sieve.

2. The fitting where the hard fuel feed meets up with the soft line is hemmohraging gasoline. As a result, there is not enough fuel pressure for it to start.

3. The immobilizer in the alarm we were smart enough to cut out is confusing.

Glenn saved the day, of course, and him and his friend Kyle saved the day by trailering the car down to Calgary today. Thank you very much to the both of you, again. Now, we need a few good men to help me firstly shove the fucker back into my garage, and secondly to address the issues mentioned above.

Rob, if you've got some time, I trust your hackjob wiring abilities more than anyone else's to ingeniously overcome number three. Jim and Grant, if you guys want to help me out with the lines and water pump, I'd be stoked.

I'll try to get it to the point where the coolant is drained, and rad, fan, and water pump are out before we start. The fuel fitting is probably going to suck. I think I'm going to JBweld the crack in the water pump housing. And then giggle.

I also have four wheels and tires for it, as well as springs and strut housings with inserts, and rear shocks. =)

Weekend, anybody? Beer + BBQ for all involved.

mk2, however as far as learning stuff about tranny and engine removal/working on they are VERY VERY similar so you can still learn lots regardless of which gen you have.

Doh! I would help but I am going to be away that weekend.

If you change the weekend I am in - I would need to have a higher rank than Glenn because I actually own a mk2.

azrael
05-21-2008, 11:47 PM
That's the weekend of earliest convenience, Ryan. I've already put off one engine pull so you can be in attendance. =P

Really, I can't leave this shit sitting in Mark's garage for that long is my only concern. Plus, you know, I want it done.

You can be the honorary Rear Admiral, though!

sorry to re-rail the thread, but how are we planning on getting down there?

I can borrow my mom's truck, which will hold 5 people, and can tow a car if need be.

azrael
05-26-2008, 09:59 PM
Don has his 4Runner -- Don, do you have a hitch on that beast?

It might get better fuel economy. What kind of truck is it?

annoyingrob
05-26-2008, 10:53 PM
Chevy Tahoe, with a 350. I do think that the 4Runner would indeed get better fuel economy than the 350 lol.

Keros
05-27-2008, 10:10 AM
Negative Cheif, no hitch.

I can get 28MPG, believe it or not... depending on the wind.

The 'runner doesn't hold much for cargo with 4-5 people seated. The Tahoe might not be a bad idea.

azrael
05-27-2008, 10:36 AM
We should be moving it from Mark's to Glenn's using Glenn's truck (if he can still borrow a car hauler) and that should give us room for the built 5M, and the spare 5M. I'm not anticipating having to take any of that home with us. The IDEAL is that the car will drive home. We'll see how that goes.

"Ideally" it's possible. As long as we all pick a task and complete it....I know there is lots of once this is done...we can...then we...

I'm still available to go at the moment.

Gonna be fun no matter what...at least we can have a few beverages!

So, whose vehicle are we taking. PFC Teron, are we clear on the 4Runner, or do we need to find alternative transportation?

I volunteer the Civic for fuel economy if we're just carting Grant/Don/Rob/Rachael and me up there.

Supra_Newfie
06-03-2008, 08:04 AM
I won't have my car available.

Are we leaving Sat. night? or Sunday morning? I think you said in the morning to me the weekend?

06-03-2008, 10:26 PM
Ok guys, Sunday morning, 8am, my house. If you don't know the address, PM me, but I'm sure most of you remember it from the BBQ.

We will be taking the Tahoe up to edmonton. It's got plenty of room to comfortably sit 5 people as well as a ton of stuff in the back.

If anyone needs anything run between Edmonton and Calgary, tell me now.

Supra_Newfie
06-03-2008, 10:49 PM
Cool.

Keegan, do you have engine hoist and leveler? Do you want me to grab mine? Want an extra set of tools brought? Mine are packed and ready to move.

Grant

I have to remember to pack the trailer hitch then :)

Supra_devil
06-04-2008, 01:29 AM
i have that covered, assuming i get the trailer from speedway then i should have it home and waiting saturday morning before you guys get here.

i'm really hoping its available, i saw the guy tonight at a race event and didn't even think to ask. DOH

Supra_Newfie
06-04-2008, 07:32 AM
Well, I'll grab my tools as a Just in case.

Rob, would you mind picking me up in the morning. I'm not far off Deerfoot. Keegan knows where I live. I just don't have a way to get to your place without waking Michelle up early on the weekend. :)

Thanks,

unfortunately, the one vehicle is all full up.

Keros
06-05-2008, 08:12 AM
4runner is a go, if we get enough people to justify a second assualt platform for the convoy.

Otherwise I recommend taking the Tahoe... more room ;)

Supra_Newfie
06-05-2008, 09:02 AM
If we have enough vehicles in the convoy, why don't we just cut up the car and re-assemble back in calgary! :) What's a few spot welds, anyway!?

Grant

NecroCyde
06-05-2008, 09:38 AM
ill bring the plasma cutter and a two man saw! who wants run the other side?

Keros
06-05-2008, 12:33 PM
An extra set of tools incase shit happens on the road would be nice... but anyone who's been in Glenn's (aka Supra Devil's) garage, will know we won't need to bring anything to glenn's garage... he's well prepared.

Don't wanna mix up tools either. But bring a set to leave in the troop carrier for battlefield service ;)

Kosh
06-05-2008, 12:39 PM
You never know when u'll need to fix that old R2 unit either. Would be shitty if you lost your navigation like that. :P

Supra_Newfie
06-05-2008, 12:41 PM
I'll have a set of tools in the 'hoe hauler. Mine are boxed and ready to go for when you pick me up Rob. I was thinking more so for the trip back with a car we just put together. haha...

Roadside Overhaul!

Grant

Supra_devil
06-05-2008, 12:51 PM
so i have the trailer for saturday, so Keegan needs to get the guys info to me, and possibly arrange a time for me to go over there if possible. If anybody wants to tag along to help move the car and engine (if need be) into the truck then feel free to help. I'll be trying to recruit some help from a couple friends as well. sunday the trailer is busy, so i have to do this saturday.

Lol! That didn't even occur to me! :D Well, once the Supra is up and running (probably not until next season) I'd like to be traveling Alberta alot more...attending meets and racing sessions. :)

Supra_Newfie
06-06-2008, 03:11 PM
Me too. I WAS attending racing session (s) but then I had to face a preventable accident. Ugh. So I've managed to miss most of the AutoSlalom events I was going to go to.

Soon....soon.

What. What's happening, I just tuned into this thread. Is this a convoy to edmonton? For Keegans gf's car? Is this about the gas chamber? What's going on with the gas chamber?

Supra_Newfie
06-07-2008, 05:39 PM
Way to be on the ball Andrew. :)

There's a mkii rolling body in Edmonton. There's a motor in Edmonton. We're going to Edmonton tomorrow morning for a ritual mating of the two at Glenn's place over a few beers and sore knuckles.

However, the current convoy vehicle is full and Jim has expressed interest to go as well. So if someone is willing to drive an additional vehicle up, then I am sure you'd be welcome to come too.

I cannot take my car, as Michelle needs it and well...you probably know the current situation of the MKII.

Grant

Black_fin
06-07-2008, 07:26 PM
Yeah, I'd volunteer the blazer but current circumstances dictate I not. I'm going back to B.C. who wants a rusty yet clean 7M Marque two with no registration for a thousand?

JimR
06-07-2008, 09:28 PM
Hey Andrew if you're interested too, we can take my Subaru station wagon (great on gas!) and whoever else it's convenient to pick up (Grant?)

Jim, if you want to go tomorrow I can ride along with you. Just let me know if you are and I'll let Rob know. Maybe we could meet here at my house and convoy from here?????

That's too bad Andrew. Have fun in BC. You going for work?

what year is the 7M MKII?

See sig. I can meet up with the previous registrant in Vancouver, I've talked to her. I might take it with me, I'm still thinking about it.

Bri-Guy
06-08-2008, 09:26 AM
Hey andrew, what year is the 7M MKII?

I'm thinking the MKII is an 84 per his sig and the 7M is a GE. Too bad, if it was GTE, I'd definitely be interested. Then again, I bet that there likely could be several others as well.

Andrew - Would be sad to see you part with your Supra, but, if that is what you need to do, I hope that a buyer shows up quickly with what you are looking to get.

Dan_Gyoba
06-08-2008, 10:39 AM
I dunno. I think that a 7M-GE in a Mk2 is still going to be a pretty fun car. I just can't do it right now.

annoyingrob
06-09-2008, 01:29 AM
So, to do:

-new water pump, preferably with back housing, and gasket

-tighten or fix fuel line

-figure out immobilizer.

Then it would have ran.

azrael
06-09-2008, 01:55 AM
We were damn close.

I'm going to edit the first post with details for Part II of this mission, which will be ongoing for a while as of tomorrow, and take place at my place of residence, and also will include an obscene amount of alcohol.

Kosh
06-09-2008, 08:26 AM
Where are the pics!!!

Supra_Newfie
06-09-2008, 10:00 AM
We were indeed close. Curious about the time though (but it does look good/close) even when maxed out on the adjustment because the distributor was put in wrong.

I'm soooo tired today here at work. But all in all, it was a good day yesterday. Although we never got what we wanted to do, done, it was still a good day and a lot was accomplished. The fuel line needs to be disconnected and inspected to see if the threads are stripped. If the hard line is still good...hopefully...then we are in an easy fix. We shall see.

That water pump/back housing is going to be the really fun part!

Alcohol....need alcohol....and a fire??? :)

Grant

Piggity
06-09-2008, 10:44 AM
Was the fuel line off the chassis spraying fuel? Those you can find off 85-88' Cressida's too if you need a line that's not stripped.

Supra_Newfie
06-09-2008, 11:54 AM
We're not 100% sure exactly where. But the flex line from the filter to the hard line on the chassis is the join that gave us some trouble.

Keegan: When you get the car back and want to confirm where the leak is and look at it yourself, use the fuel pump check connector by the AFM. Jump it, to turn on only the fuel pump and look for leaks. It's the little yellow rectangle one by the AFM.

I can help you with it some night too.

Grant

JimR
06-09-2008, 12:42 PM
When I saw the gas leak it appeared to be further back than that. It was more or less directly under the drivers seat.

If, by some CRAZY luck, the 5M and 7M water pumps are identical, I've got a freebie pump in perfect working order for you Keegan!

Supra_Newfie
06-09-2008, 12:51 PM
COme to think of it, the one I took off mine (which was working perfectly) is in my house. So you can have one for a 5M too.

Grabt

azrael
06-09-2008, 12:55 PM
The part number is off by one digit. =(

(MA61 water pump = 16100-49655 & 16100-49656, MA70 water pump (GE and GTE) = 16100-49755 & 16100-49756)

They are EXTREMELY similar, from what I can see.

azrael
06-09-2008, 12:56 PM

Yes we replaced it. Yes it took till 2am, But we started late... actually we had to clean out the garage, fix flat tires, go buy stuff, jack the car up, take everything off, etc, etc

And I beat you to it again Keegan! hahaha

Supra_Newfie
06-12-2008, 11:15 AM
haha. So you bought a new pump? I couldn't find mine after, and I forgot to tell Keegan. Sorry. But at least all is well. Have fun with the fuel issue. Hopefully, it won't be a replace the hard line job...that SUCKS!

Grant

azrael
06-12-2008, 11:25 AM
Nope. Andrew had what appeared to be a nearly new pump in a box of stuff he pawned off on me. It was very much like what Glenn did. There was some really neat stuff in there.

Still need a thermostat housing for the 82 motor?

Supra_Newfie
06-12-2008, 01:18 PM
Cool. I do need the t-stat housing, but needs to be 84+ style. Since you have an 85, I believe it'll work. :)

Thanks,
Grant

azrael
06-12-2008, 01:25 PM
The one Andrew gave me, with thermostat and plugs still in it, is from an 84. Will that work for you?

Supra_Newfie
06-13-2008, 07:25 AM
Perfect! Thanks.

G

azrael
06-13-2008, 10:03 AM
Update! It is DEFINITELY leaking from the fitting where the hard line meets the soft line.

The car now has a battery and a rad cap, and Jeremy's old intake.

azrael
06-15-2008, 08:29 PM
THE CAR RUNS!

Replaced the soft fuel line from the filter to the hard feed line, and the new one seemed to seal better.

The engine holds an idle quite healthily, no knocking or ticking, but it seems to want to idle at about 3500 RPM consistently. Vac leak or ECU are my thoughts, but maybe that's just because on the night my 85 kicked the bucket, it seemed to be getting confused by the loss of voltage and idling stupid-high. Seemed to smooth out back then when the ECU figured itself out.

JimR
06-15-2008, 09:31 PM
Great stuff! I can't wait to see Rachael's car on the road! Suspension next?

annoyingrob
06-15-2008, 10:07 PM
you still starting it with a wire?

Supra_Newfie
06-16-2008, 09:06 AM
So the high idle was an incorrectly adjusted throttle. It was held open slightly for idle...hence the 3000+RPM idle speed! All that's fixed now but it definitely seems like the car is missing and has a rough idle. I'm thinking timing and plug wires. The one on the car don't seal properly so he's going to replace them and get the car timed. There is also a small vac leak near the brake booster. We have yet to locate exactly.

Then the suspension is next. That's the relatively straight forward part.

Keegan...contact stevrock and get those whitelines!!! :)

Get an empty windex bottle and fill it with water and dishsoap. It'll find vac leaks like nobody's buisiness.

Anybody feel like helping me do suspension on this car sometime during the week? The list is down to:

- Install PS pulley and belt
- Change springs and shocks
- Replace exhaust donuts
- Fix ignition/starter wiring
- Wire CD Deck

And obviously, the last point isn't critical. =)

...and today's been awfully informative.

I uh. Got a sparkplug socket stuck on plug 6. It's right the fuck on there and not coming off. The sparkplug doesn't want to turn, either. Anyone got a hammer I can borrow? Ryan? Bueller?

I also need a key for the power steering pulley.

Anyone have a ratcheting 12mm wrench I could borrow to do the exhaust gaskets? They're not that bad to get at, except it's awkward doing them from above without one.

I can't help you out this week Keegan. My bro is coming in tomorrow and I am busy tonight. If you need some tools, let me know and you can swing by and borrow them. I don't have ratcheting wrenches either.

As for the spark plug, just but some muscle into it!! :) You could try putting a little penetrating lube into the hole too, might help.

The PS pulley off the 82 motor any good to you? or the whole thing? I'm home tonight, so feel free to drop by, I'm just busy here.

Cheers,
Grant

When I drop my block off at Precise (wednesday) and I've got my parts ordered, I should have more time for "other" projects. :-)

- Hammers: check
- Releaseall: check
- Spark plug sockets, extensions, pliers, etc: check
- Wrenches: check

Socket is off the sparkplug. The plugs, however, refuse to come out. I think I'm going to need a breaker bar, though I cringe to think of using it on something threaded into an aluminum head.

get some penetrant in the spark plug holes, and leave it sit for a few hours... that should help. Better than reefing on it dry anyway.

Ow ow ow ow ow.

In other words, someone Godzilla'd the spark plugs in. I don't envy you that task...

Got it with a small snipe. New ones are in nice and snug, I didn't even bugger the threads.

Distributor SHOULD be set at least a little farther back such that we can advance it to where it should be. Should be.

Plugs and wires and everything are back on.

One of the exhaust nuts is off - I really need either a long, long extension on a 14 from underneath, or a ratcheting wrench to get the last two.

After that, wiring and suspension and she's ready to rock.

Did you put any anti-seize on the plug threads before putting the new ones in?

We did now!

The engine is back together. It doesn't leak anything heinous. There's a bit of a questionable knocking noise, and by 'questionable,' I mean 'bottom end bearings.' Nice rebuilt engine, Cressida owners.

Updated List of Fun Things to Do!

- Replace front springs and struts
- Replace rear springs and struts
- Swap wheels and tires
- Install shifter bushing set
- Find the other half of the starter wire and splice them back together
- Figure out why the hell the headlights just plain don't work
- Wire in stereo head unit

The car now starts when you turn the key. Well, technically I still need to crimp the two halves of wire together, but that's minor.

Headlights are still a mystery.

Incidentally, I need a set of mk2 front strut inserts. (Kind of like the pair I outright gave Tara.) Anyone got some Monroes or similarly mediocre aftermarket struts in working order they would let go cheap and/or free? Pay it forward and all, I'm sure I have something you need.

HEADLIGHTS EFFING WORK.

Jesus that was epic. I'm not proud of how I did it, but it works.

Car now only needs the rear springs and shocks done, and then it's finished.

Man, if only I had more TIME..... but I've got my own wiring work to sort out!
