Okay, I've been keeping reasonably quiet about this one (unless you're Rob, Tara, Andrew, Bill, Jeremy, Grant, Ryan, or Glenn -- so I guess I haven't been THAT quiet) but this car is a really, really good story, and one hell of a piece of work.
Waaaay back in the day...no, keep going. We're talking immediately after my first Supra, so between October 06 and April 07, probably on the side of the former, I was walking home from work one day, when what should I spy in the parking lot of the Cornerstone grill on the corner of Macleod Trail and Southland Drive but an exceptionally shiny black 82/83 Supra. Being as I was delightfully enamoured with my first car, and quite fond of recruiting new club members, I quickly pulled a piece of paper out of a notebook in my bag, scrawled a long-winded note about how I was very impressed with the condition of the car, listing the internet addresses for CS.com and here, as well as my phone number with the words "If the car ever needs a good home" attached, and slid it under his windshield wiper.
I promptly forgot all about it, and didn't think about it again.
As I was on my way home, a few weeks ago, from picking up a CT-26 from a DoriKaze member, my cell phone rings. I don't recognize the number, but I pick it up anyways. A male voice on the other end asks me if this is Keegan -- I tell him it is. He recounts to me a story about how, about a year ago, maybe more, I left a note on his car saying that if it ever needed a good home, he should call me. Well, he was ready to sell it, buying something new, and he kept that note for more than a year, sitting in his office.
I think I peed myself a little, I can't remember.
Now, I couldn't really afford this car. I figured he'd want, you know, what it was worth, but like hell I was going to pass up the chance to take a look at it and drive it, so after he tells me a little about the car, I agree to meet him at his place on Sunday and take a look. That was the weekend it snowed, so I didn't, so much. However, the weekend after was another story.
So, on a bright, sunny Sunday morning, Ryan and Tara and I pile into his Supra and take a (rather confusing) trip out to Cranston to look at this car. We look at it, go home, and I muse over it. That week, my bank agrees to lend me a substantial sum of money. That week, I have someone drive me out to pick it up.
Let me tell you a little about this car.
Firstly, it's from Montreal. Why, you ask, would I buy a Supra from Eastern Canada, where "mint" qualifies anything that has ANY solid metal left? Primarily, because it was never winter driven in Montreal. In fact, with 162,382 on the clock, it really wasn't driven much at all. Secondly, the guy I left the note for? Original owner. I have with this car the original bill of sale, and paperwork for pretty well all of the service done since new -- honestly, there's not a lot. The timing belt was done at 120xxx kms, some stuff was cleaned up, the shocks and struts were replaced a few years back, the AC was retrofitted for R134a, and a couple minor little things were done here and there, but let me assure you: this car is, essentially all factory original, or at least OEM.
Let's talk about rust. The car was brought here from Montreal a few years ago, and for the most part, was not winter driven. The exception is the past couple years, and as such, it it starting to show signs. A little bit under and above the gas tank filler door, a little spot in some of the rocker trim under the door, a bit of surface rust on the underside of the hatch, and some bubbles in the cowl under the windshield. That is all. The body, underneath, is immaculate, and I've seen it with the benefit of a lift.
The original exhaust lasted for seventeen years. It's since had new pipewelded on just behind the cat, and a muffler on that. The automatic climate control still works beautifully. The car even still has the stock radio and graphic equalizer - both work. The driver's side seat bolster is slightly worn, but has no rips. The center console lid is the same. The carpet is beautiful, it has color-matched OEM floormats, the dash is pristine, and all the switches and things still have visible white writing on them.
This car was someone's baby.
Driving it is a dream - I keep having to check to see if I've stalled it when it cruises in to a stop light, it idles that smoothly. 550 on the nose. Some of the tightest suspension and steering I've ever felt, for sure. The ride quality is amazing, and aside from a whiny rebuilt power steering pump, you almost can't hear it idle. Easily, this is the strongest low-comp 5M I've ever had the pleasure of driving. This car, to be driven, is the closest I will ever come to driving one off the lot brand-new in 1983. This is the sort of thing you pray that you'll find some day -- I couldn't really afford it, but I couldn't really afford not to, at the end of the day.
She's not perfect. The paint has some rock chips, and there's those couple spots of rust. I'm going to have it touched up in that respect. I can't really afford not to. All the scars she has, though, are the scars of being driven, and used very carefully. I have absolutely no complaints about what I've gotten in this car.
Here's some photos of her. There will be more -- really, how could there not be? With a friend, on our trip to Penhold for an autocross event, May 4th, 2008. The other car belongs to Grant. (Supra_Newfie)
