Hey,
Before you bash a Ford question in this forum remember; If it wasn't for my Ford the Supra would never get parts to make it go again. :P

Has anybody done wheel bearings (front) on a 94 Ford Taurus? I need to know if this is a specialty item. I saw or heard that you have to replace the whole spindal on these cars. They are $300 each...not worth it if that is true.

If you have done this or have a manual I can look at that would be a great help.

Thanks guys,

Hi Earl,

I do not see why one would need to replace the whole spindle on these things. The spindle sits inside the centre of bearing and is what drives the wheel. The bearing should be easy to do.

Well I am getting some kind of sound from the front and it is not good. Sounds like bearings are worn but I have not had a car fail bearings before so I do not know what the sound would be.

i meant Hubs and spindles, sorry. the wheel bearings should be easy to replace.
the only part on the hub for the bearing is the race and it can be changed and the bearings normally comewith new ones but i hva enever changed the race as 99% of the time the are still good. just inspect it to make sure its good still. no pits, groves, wear patterns, etc.

Hi Earl,

Is it possable you need new front brakes? Perhaps the pads have worn to the squeelers? What type of noise is it?

Pads look good. When I bought the car I had it aligned and the mechanic said that the brakes are good and that noise is probably a bearing. I looked at the pads just the other day to confirm this. This car does have close to 300,000 KM on it.

The sound sort of gets louder and pulsates in corners and I am sure it is the drivers wheel.

Hi Earl,

Your answer is satisfactory. LOL! Sounds like the wheel bearing is the culprit. Maybe a ball joint? The wheel bearing will be an easy fix. If you like we can do it when i get back. Are the bearings pressed in?

Good thing I passed! hahahahaha!
One time offer:
Free ride in my wagon to anyone who wants to try to guess the noise.

OK, yeah I will find out this weekend if they are pressed. I know the bearings are $39 a side before discount & tax. What else am I gonna need? Grease I guess $10....anything else?

When are you back? I may have to do this soon for summer traveling...If I can take the Supra I will but that depends on the wife.

Url.

EDIT: Called partsource and they said it looks like it is pressed becuse it is not a tapered bearing. That means I'm gonna have to borrow your joint separators for this...please. Other ideas as to what I might need?

Hey Earl,

You will not need grease if they are pressed in. You will need a cottor pin, an aircompressor with the right socket size. You could always take it to Darren at Brake Check to press out the old bearing and press in the new one. Total cost for that was $30.00 As for the ball joint seperator, I can not remember if I bought it or rented it. I will need to check my tool box. That is about it. You will need to remove your wheel, caliper, rotor and a few other bolts to access it. Then remove the hub and take it to Darren. I hav heard that you can also hammer the old bearing out with wood or something, and then press in the new bearing with the old one, but I just assume spend the $30.00 and have Darren press it in and out! =)

Worn wheel bearings sound like a helicopter, so if that's not the sound you're hearing, it's not the wheel bearing. I once fixed one on a saturn. I'm surprised the bearing is so cheap. The one for the saturn was $90. Anyhow, you will need to herculean strength to get the bearing out with just a block of wood. What we did was used a piece of pipe, and then put it on a 6000 ton press and pushed it out. You can push the new one back in with a block of wood (maybe) or some steel, but make sure it is centred perfectly or you will break the bearing.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Tim

Thanks for all the feed back guys....I'm going to take the car to a shop and have them check it out...I would hate to fix something that was not broken.

I would take the hub to a shop to have the bearing pressed on & off.
