Hey i am looking at buying an 88 supra off a guy in calgary the only driving problem is that it seems to grind a little going into second. I was just wondering if anyone had an opinion on this. My buddy thinks its just the syncro, but any input would be great, just on any ideas and how much it would cast to fix. Thanks.

its normally the synchro that goes on these trannys. is it turbo or NA? the tranny is different. A lot of people report that it gets better with a good synthetic tranny fluid.

does it grind every time you hit second? and is it really bad or just a bit of noise? my NA transmission sometimes grinds pretty badly going into second, but generally its liveable. as far as getting your synchros redone it might cost more than its worth. searching on http://www.car-part.com you can get a used R154 (I'm assuming that its a 5 speed here) for $270

Hi Dilsky,

It sounds like the culprit is the syncros. It may be that your clutch is not grabbing so you may need a clutch. But if it is only happening in 2nd gear then I would put my money on the Syncros.

As for the cost to repair it? I am not sure.

Hope this helps.

I have looked into this:
DIY way:
To do a full rebuild on the R154 transmission would cost $280 in parts (without discount). If you are just looking to replace that #2 syncro it would be $60 for that one syncro + bits & fluid to do. You would have to do the same amount of work to replace one syncro as it would to replace all.

Shop way:
Retailers will charge you $800-$1200 for the same work if you just took it to them.

The best way:
Find a buddy who works with transmissions and pull it yourself & drop it off at his house. Buy pizza & beer & have him walk you through it.

OR

Buy the used $270 transmission; rebuild it while you still drive your car. Put it in, rebuild the other transmission and sell it for $750. You get a new rebuild for free & become the transmission guru for R154's in your area.

Note: A new used transmission for 270! Buy it! The best I could find was $500 2 months ago. But it must have a guarantee of working well.

Changing the oil will make a difference even if you just go with Canadian tire old stuff. People do not change the transmission oil often enough.

Ok well thanks for all your help guys, my uncle is a mechanic and as long as i help him he usually only charges me for the parts. So i think i should be set. My dad was going to check it out today while in Calgary so i will see what he says but as far as i can see i am just gunna go ahead and buy it. Once again thanks.

Now your uncle is guy we need to get into a supra! *wink*

If you do get it, take some pictures and post up in the gallery. Then you will have a begining set of pictures. And post up any work you do.
